Overview

Location

Elmendorf AFB is located in the south central part of Alaska. The beautiful and diverse city of Anchorage, Alaska is immediately outside the base. This part of Alaska is sometimes referred to as "The Banana Belt" of Alaska. Many northern tier states such as Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan have shorter but much colder winters than south central Alaska. History

Construction on Elmendorf Field began on June 8, 1940. The first Air Corps personnel arrived on August 12, 1940. On November 12, 1940, the War Department formally designated what had been popularly referred to as Elmendorf Field as Fort Richardson. The air facilities on the post were named Elmendorf Field in honor of Capt. Hugh M. Elmendorf killed in 1933, while flight testing an experimental fighter near Wright Field, Ohio. After World War II, the Army moved its operations to the new Fort Richardson and the Air Force assumed control of the original Fort Richardson and renamed it Elmendorf Air Force Base.

Mission

The 3rd Wing is Elmendorf's host unit. As the largest and principle unit within the 11th AF, the 3rd Wing is tasked with providing air defense and air superiority in Alaska, as well as supporting Pacific Air Forces during contingencies in the Pacific Command area of responsibility. It has three main functional groups: Operations, Logistics, and Support. Elmendorf provides combat ready forces on a recurring basis to the Southwest Asia operations.

Population Served

Elmendorf AFB serves a diverse population consisting of over 23,000 active duty, guard and reserve, family members, and DoD civilians and retirees.

Base Transportation

Local shuttle bus service is available on the base. The shuttle bus operates Monday - Friday 6:00 am to 5:00 pm (Except Federal Holidays). Schedules are posted at each bus stop. The shuttle does not operate when the base is closed due to inclement weather.

Sponsorship

Always request a sponsor before you depart PCS. If you haven't heard from your sponsor in a timely manner, you can contact your gaining unit command section, the Elmendorf Airman and Family Readiness Center, (907) 552-2694/4943 or DSN 317-552-2694/4943, and/or the Arctic Warrior Orientation Center ((907) 552-6619 or DSN 317-552-6619) for assistance.

Dorm residents will receive mail at the dorms. Your sponsor may open a dorm mail box for you by providing a copy of your PCS orders and/or pertinent information (name, rank, unit, and reporting date) to the dorm manager. After you arrive on base and are residing in the dorm you need to contact your dorm manager to get your box combination. The General Delivery Address may be used if advanced dorm/box assignment cannot be arranged, Name, 8111 Craw Ave. Unit 3000, Elmendorf AFB, AK 99506-3510.

Temporary Quarters

The North Star Inn provides all temporary lodging on Elmendorf AFB. Reservations for lodging should be made as far in advance as possible to insure temporary lodging facilities are available upon arrival ((907) 552-2454 or DSN 317-552-2454). If the accompanied member and their family do not have a confirmed reservation they may be issued a non-availability slip to go off base and obtain a hotel/motel in Anchorage. During the summer month's hotel/motels are limited. The lodging office has a referral list of hotels/motels that are within the Temporary Lodging Allowance costs. They can also provide listings of off base hotels/motels that accept pets.

You'll get expert advice and information regarding relocating, even to Alaska. Once here at Elmendorf, the professional staff will continue relocation assistance for you and your family.

Critical Installation Information

Alaska Time Zone is 4 hours behind Eastern Time Zone, one hour behind Pacific Time Zone.

Elmendorf and Fort Richardson are both impacted by the latest BRAC. The installations will be realigned. More information will be provided as it's made available.
